“What’s a simulated experience again?” Michael asked aloud, half to himself.
A voice answered from behind him.
“It’s when all your memories are false. Implanted. Fabricated. Designed to control you.”
Michael turned. Cedric stood there, his form flickering—half man, half echo. His eyes glowed with stolen recollections.
“You remember your sister’s lullaby?” Cedric asked.
Michael nodded.
“I wrote it.”
The truth hit like a blade. Cedric could manipulate people by stealing their memories—or worse, replacing them. He had rewritten entire lives, sculpted identities from borrowed pain.
The ruins around them pulsed with forgotten dreams. Statues wept digital tears. A choir of broken androids sang hymns in reverse.
Michael raised his weapon, but Cedric only smiled.
