The war council chamber was dim, lit only by the flickering glow of enchanted torches. The air was thick with tension, and the silence was broken by a voice that trembled with conviction.That’s all well and good,” said Kael, his silver eyes scanning the room, “but what if Yami gives the order to attack?”The others shifted uneasily. They had all sworn allegiance to the Fire Lord, but Yami—Kael’s brother, once lost to the shadows—had returned, cloaked in mystery and power. His claim to the throne was undeniable. His vision for the kingdom, seductive.

>“I’ve been pondering that issue myself,” Kael continued. “I did swear my allegiance. To be honest, I’m torn.”

He looked to the others—Seris, the flame priestess; Dren, the half-cyborg knight; and Mira, the last moonborn seer. Each bore the mark of fire on their soul, each had fought for the kingdom’s survival. But now, the question loomed: Which side would they take?

Kael’s voice dropped to a whisper.  

>“I will be leaving this world. And he… he will be taking the throne.”

A hush fell. They all knew what that meant. Kael’s soul was bound to the Flame Gate, the ancient portal between realms. His sacrifice would ignite the throne anew, allowing Yami to ascend and restore the kingdom to its former glory.

>“Trust the light in your soul,” Mira said softly. “The Land of Fire doesn’t need two kings.”

>“The Fire Lord is superfluous,” Dren added. “We already have a man at the helm.”

Kael chuckled bitterly.  

>“That job should have really been mine. Too bad I can’t seem to make the grade.”

He turned toward the window, gazing at the distant silhouette of Mount Goro. The humans had named it after the guttural roar of the monster that once attacked the mountain village—Gorok, the beast of ash and sorrow. It was there Kael had found Yami, wandering the darkness after they lost track of each other during the Siege of Embers.

Yami had changed. His eyes glowed with a fire not born of magic, but of something older—something primal. He spoke of unity, of a kingdom reborn through flame and shadow. And Kael, despite his doubts, had listened.

Now, the final choice loomed.

Would they follow the old ways, clinging to a fractured crown and a fading king? Or would they embrace the fire within, and let Yami lead them into a new age?

Kael turned back to the council.  

>“If it comes to that… I need to know. Which side will you take?”

The torches flared, casting dancing shadows across their faces. And one by one, they stepped forward—into the fire, into the unknown.
