“The Promise of the Nether Star”
The village of Elaris hadn’t slept in weeks.
Children cried in their dreams. Elders muttered in tongues long forgotten. The stars above flickered like dying embers, and the moon—once a silver guardian—now hung low and red, bleeding light into the mist.
They said it was the living dead.
Not the shambling kind from old tales, but something deeper. Memories that refused to die. Regrets that clawed their way out of the soil. Whispers from the Nether World.
And in the heart of it all sat the old man.
Master Ansem.
He hadn’t spoken in years. Just sat beneath the twisted tree at the edge of the ruins, carving symbols into the bark with a blade made of obsidian and sorrow. But the quiet ones always know more than they let on.
I approached him at dawn, my jacket heavy with dust and the lion on my back dulled by time. The words stitched beneath it—High King of the Nether World—felt more like a curse than a title.
“Wise Master Ansem,” I said, kneeling before him. “I seek your advice. Forget this talk of doors to the heart of all worlds. That place must not be defiled.”
He looked up slowly, eyes like cracked glass, reflecting stars that no longer shone.
“You’ve come far,” he rasped. “But dreams are fragile things. They break when touched by truth.”
“It was a long journey,” I said. “But this is all that’s left. I need you to help fulfill my dreams. I believe that was the promise.”
Ansem’s fingers trembled as he reached into his robes and pulled out a shard of moonstone. It pulsed faintly, like a heartbeat.
“The living dead are not what you think,” he whispered. “They are echoes. And echoes must be answered.”
He pressed the stone into my palm.
“Go to the ruins. Stand beneath the Nether Star. Speak your truth. Only then will the dreams return.”
I rose, the weight of destiny settling on my shoulders. The wind howled through the trees, carrying the scent of forgotten magic.
And as I walked toward the ruins, I knew the promise was more than a vow.
It was a reckoning.

Want to expand this into a full saga? We could build out the Nether World, design the ruins, or even sketch the lion-emblazoned jacket in full 90s anime detail. Just say the word.
