Each step pulled me deeper into a world that looked like ours but wasn’t. The trees were twisted versions of themselves, their branches whispering secrets in languages I almost understood. The sky was the same shade of blue, but the stars blinked in unfamiliar constellations. I should be safe here, I told myself. But safety is a fragile thing.

The nightmare had told me what to do. Not in words, but in impressions—flashes of pain, glimpses of a door, the sound of my own voice screaming. I followed its guidance, even as the world bent around me. This can’t be happening. Not again.

I ran through corridors of memory, chased by something that wore my face but not my soul. Stop it. Stay away from me. It whispered my name like a curse, like a promise. I stumbled into a chamber of glass and shadow, where the others were waiting.

We were finally able to send him to the other world. The mirror world. The place beneath the lake. But as the ripples settled and the surface stilled, we saw it clearly: the two worlds weren’t identical after all.

In ours, the moon was full.
