Below the cliffs, the crystal fields pulsed faintly. He had sent the Seekers to gather them—fragments of emotion, memory, and corrupted light. But now, when he needed to speak with them, they were gone. Typical.

“Great,” he muttered. “Now that I need to talk to them, I can’t find them.”

A shadow stepped from the mist. Leather jacket, badge glinting, eyes sharp with suspicion.

“You know who I am,” the figure said. “So you know I’m a cop. What do you jokers want with me?”

Ansem turned slowly. “You’re not with the monsters.”

“No,” the cop replied. “But I’ve seen what you’ve done. The girl. The crystals. The experiments. Who’s pulling your strings?”

Ansem’s smile was thin. “Strings? I severed mine long ago. I serve no master. Only the truth buried in the heart’s abyss.”

The wind howled. Somewhere below, the crystals began to sing.
