“The Eight Roads to Heaven”

In the age before empires, when the world was carved into warring city-states, supremacy was not claimed by treaties or coin—but by blood. Armies clashed beneath moonless skies, and when the victors stood among the fallen, they built altars from the bodies and weapons of their enemies. These grotesque monuments were offerings to the gods of war, proof of dominance, and warnings to all who dared challenge their rule.

But war never ends. It only changes form.

Now, in the era of the Eight Kings, each sovereign wields a blade forged from the bones of fallen titans and rules one of the Eight Roads that lead to the heavens. These roads are not paths of peace—they are veins of power, pulsing with ancient magic and guarded by warriors who have long forgotten mercy.

Tonight, one such warrior crouches in the shadow of a ruined shrine, roller blades silent against the cracked stone. His name is Kaito, and though his sword gleams with celestial fire, his heart is heavy.

"Man... when is this night going to end?" he mutters, eyes scanning the horizon. The stars above shimmer like distant souls, but offer no guidance. He’s not ready. Not for what’s coming.

Beside him, Rei adjusts her bowstring, her gaze fixed on the hill ahead. “Looks like we’re on our own,” she says. “Naraku can’t find him. Not tonight. Not with his power sealed by the new moon.”

Kaito exhales sharply. “Then it’s over.”

Rei doesn’t answer. She just nods, solemn. “You put up a good fight.”

But something isn’t right.

The kingdom that hired them—House Tsuyoshi, famed for its obsidian towers and flame-wielding knights—is just beyond that hill. They were promised reinforcements. A battalion. A signal fire. Anything.

Instead, there’s silence.

No banners. No sentries. No flicker of torchlight.

Kaito tightens his grip on his sword. “It’s dead. The whole kingdom. I can feel it.”

Rei draws an arrow, the tip glowing faintly with enchanted light. “Then we’re walking into a graveyard.”

They crest the hill together, blades and bow at the ready. Below, the city lies in ruin. Streets flooded with shadows. Altars of bone and steel rise like tombstones. And at the center, where the palace once stood, a single figure waits—cloaked in black, eyes burning red.

It’s not Naraku.

It’s one of the Eight Kings.

And he’s smiling.

Want to expand this into a full arc? We could build out each of the Eight Kings, their weapons, their roads, and the celestial lore that binds them. Or dive deeper into Kaito and Rei’s backstory—maybe they were once part of a ninth kingdom, erased from history. Let’s keep building.
