Arthur’s sword, Excalibur, was no ordinary blade. It was wrought by the lovely Maiden of the Lake, who labored nine years beneath the golden hills of the deep. Her forge was lit by moonlight and sorrow, and each strike of her hammer echoed through the waters like a heartbeat. When she emerged, she carried a weapon that could cleave fate itself.

Not because I’m worthy—but because the witch of the Black Rose needs me.

She lives in the ruins of Viremoor, where the roses bloom black and whisper secrets to the wind. They say she once loved the king. They say she cursed the stars. But I know her only as the one who saved my life when the Hollow Court tried to erase me.

Now she’s in danger. But she doesn’t want help.

Why?

I’ve asked the roses. They hissed. I’ve asked the ravens. They laughed. I even asked the sword. It stayed silent.

So I turned to Jack.

He’s a rogue, a hacker, a ghost in the machine. He hates magic, but he owes me. If I can get him on our side, we might stand a chance. But Jack doesn’t trust witches. Or swords. Or me.

Meanwhile, the battlefield shifts.

“Keep your eyes open,” I whisper to Kael through the comms. “The SWAT cat on the right is lining you up in his sight.”

Kael rolls, fires, curses. One of the gun barrels was cracked, but I worked around that—patched it with a shard of enchanted glass and a prayer to the Maiden. It holds. Barely.

Then I see it.

A glint in the dust. A shimmer in the void.

A Chaos Emerald.

But it’s wrong.

Too smooth. Too quiet. Too… fake.

“What the hell is a fake Chaos Emerald doing out here in the middle of nowhere?” I mutter.

Jack’s voice crackles through the static. “That’s not fake. It’s bait.”

I freeze.

Because if someone’s planting Chaos Emeralds in dead zones, they’re not just hunting power.

They’re hunting us.

And if the witch of the Black Rose doesn’t want help… maybe it’s because she knows what’s coming.

And maybe she’s trying to keep us from becoming the next Excalibur.
