In all my reign, nothing seemed more natural than choosing Sensui. From the time he was a child, apparitions bent toward him as if pulled by unseen chains. They whispered secrets in the dark, brushed against his shoulders like moths drawn to flame, and he listened—calm, unafraid, as though he had always belonged to their world.  

We came to this land many years ago, when the rivers still sang and the forests had not yet learned to tremble. But now, the trees grow restless. Their branches shiver without wind, their roots groan beneath the soil. It is a sign—disaster coils in the shadows, or worse, something already sinister has taken root.  

The council fears what I already know: only Gaul the Sage can stop what is coming. Yet Gaul has not spoken to mortals in ages. His voice is said to be buried beneath snow and silence, far to the north where the mountains pierce the heavens. To reach him, one must cross the Fire Canyon—a place where the earth itself burns, where rivers of molten stone carve paths like veins of fury.  

Sensui, with his gift, is the only one who can walk among apparitions without losing himself. He must lead us. But the canyon is no mere obstacle; it is a trial. The flames there do not consume flesh alone—they test the soul, strip away illusions, and reveal whether one is worthy of truth.  

I fear what Sensui will see when the fire lays him bare. Yet I know this: if he falters, the apparitions will scatter, the trees will scream, and our land will drown in calamity.  

So we prepare. With utmost care, we gather provisions, whisper prayers, and steel our hearts. The apparitions circle him already, their eyes glowing like lanterns in the dusk. They know he is chosen. They know the path north is the only hope.  

And as the night deepens, I hear the forest sigh—a warning, a promise. The journey has begun.
