The air in the Dark Kingdom’s throne room was stagnant, smelling of ozone and old dust. Shadows clung to the corners, twisting like living things, terrified of the figure seated upon the twisted throne.
Nephrite knelt on the cold stone, his cape pooling around him. He kept his head bowed, sweat beading on his forehead despite the chill.
"Nephrite," the Queen’s voice echoed, smooth yet laced with jagged edges. "I hear you are having trouble gathering human energy for our great ruler."
Nephrite swallowed hard, daring to look up. "My Queen, the energy density in this sector is lower than anticipated. The humans are resilient, and the interference from—"
"Excuses," she interrupted, tapping a long, sharp fingernail against the armrest.
"The universe wasn't built in a day, my Queen," Nephrite said, a hint of his usual arrogance slipping into his tone. "Great works take time."
The air pressure in the room dropped instantly. The Queen’s eyes flared with violet light.
"Watch your tongue," she hissed. The shadows behind the throne surged forward. "Question my orders again, or fail to capture the Guardians, and you will find yourself right alongside Piccolo in the eternal sleep."
Nephrite flinched, his gaze darting involuntarily to the far wall. There, encased in a translucent, amber-like crystal, was the Namekian warrior Piccolo. His face was frozen in a silent scream, his hand outstretched as if reaching for a beam cannon that would never fire. He was a trophy. A warning.
Nephrite bowed his face to the floor. "It shall be done."
The Queen turned her gaze away from the general, fixing her eyes on the figure leaning against a pillar in the shadows. A man with spiky, gravity-defying hair and a tail wrapped securely around his waist.
"And you," she spat.
The Saiyan didn't flinch. He crossed his arms, staring at the floor, his brow furrowed in genuine confusion. "I don’t understand what’s going on," he muttered, more to himself than her. "Dabura is their greatest fighter. His power level... it was immense. Why would they withdraw?"
He looked up at the Queen, his eyes dark with frustration. "We were evenly matched. The shockwaves were tearing the ground apart. Then, right when I powered up for the final strike, he just... smiled and vanished. This would all be over if it wasn't for that retreat."
"If it wasn't for you," the Queen corrected, her voice rising to a shout. "There is no excuse for you fighting like that! You are a Saiyan! A warrior like Dabura should be dead at your feet, and now you are sitting here wondering what’s next when it should already be done!"
The Saiyan clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. "I am a warrior. I don't strike an enemy who flees without cause. It’s a trap. I can smell it."
"I don't pay you to smell traps; I pay you to conquer!" She stood up, her silhouette towering over them both. "The Demon King Dabura does not retreat unless he has secured an advantage elsewhere. While you hesitated, they likely moved the pieces right under our noses."
She pointed a jagged finger toward the exit.
"We cannot risk them summoning the Eternal Dragon now. Our plans are not yet ripe. Tell your friends—the Ginyu remnants, the Androids, whoever is left standing—to take the orbs."
"The Dragon Balls?" the Saiyan asked.
"Yes," she commanded, her voice echoing with finality. "Take them and scatter them throughout the Dragon World of Avalon. Let the Guardians chase their tails across the mystic lands while we drain this planet dry. Now go!"
Nephrite scrambled to his feet, bowing hastily, while the Saiyan pushed off the pillar. He cast one last look at the frozen Piccolo, a reminder of the price of failure, and turned to leave.
The hunt for the orbs had begun.
