Protectors of The Vast Oceans, An Air of Disorder & The Twists of Destiny Heavy Metal Type Beat

The tea in Genkai’s cup hadn’t rippled in twenty minutes. To any passerby in the temple grounds, the afternoon was a painting of serenity—the wind was a soft breath, and the cherry blossoms fell like slow-motion snow.

But I could feel it. Even though my own spiritual energy had been severed months ago, leaving me "human" in the eyes of the world, my instinct remained. The air didn’t feel like air; it felt like a held breath before a scream.

"Everything seems peaceful enough, doesn't it?" Genkai’s voice was raspy, cutting through the silence. She didn't look at me. "Yet I sense chaos. It’s a rot underneath the floorboards."

I shifted my weight, looking down at my hands. "I’m powerless, Genkai. What can I do about a rot I can't even fight anymore?"

"You lost your power, not your purpose," she snapped, finally meeting my eyes. "You were born under the influence of an unusual star, kid. Your spirit power was always different—it wasn't just raw force; it was a tether. You have everything required to be a Detective of the Spirit World, but I’m afraid your mission is about to take a turn for the worse."

The Company We Keep

I looked toward the temple gate. Standing there were the three who had walked through hell with me:

  • Kurama: Calm and analytical, his eyes already scanning the perimeter for threats we couldn't see.
  • Yugi: His hand rested on his deck, his connection to the ancient puzzles giving him a sixth sense for the shifting shadows.
  • Hiei: Leaning against a cedar tree, his Jagan eye hidden under his headband, though his hand gripped the hilt of his sword tight enough to whiten his knuckles.

"I am afraid this is their fate as much as yours," Genkai whispered.

The Silent Guardians

My gaze drifted to the two massive dragon statues flanking the entrance to the inner sanctum. They were weathered, moss-covered stone, their eyes blank and indifferent. They were the legendary Guardians of the Spirit World.

"I guess we haven't seen them move lately," I noted, trying to find a bit of dark humor. "Since their power hasn't been needed for a century."

"They are more than stone," Genkai warned, her face tightening. "I sure hope they’re real when we need them. Because the seal is thinning, and what’s coming doesn't care that you’ve retired."

As she spoke, a low vibration hummed through the soles of my boots. The sky didn't darken, but the light turned a sickly, bruised purple. The stone dragons didn't move, but for the first time in my life, I heard them breathe.

The mission wasn't over. It was just getting dangerous
