The Descended Dragon, Ultimate Intuition & Society of The Bear Hard Rock Type Beat
The rain slicked the gargoyles of the cathedral roof, a cold, miserable drizzle that seemed to seep into the very soul of the city. I adjusted the heavy collar of my trench coat, my hand resting instinctively on the pommel of the blade hidden beneath.
I am a Knight of the Order of the Bear. For centuries, we have held the line. We are the watchers in the night, the keepers of the flame, waiting for the return of the Once and Future King. We believe that when the world’s spiritual light is all but extinguished, King Arthur will be reincarnated to usher in a new age of enlightenment.
Tonight, however, the darkness felt overwhelming.
Below us, deep in the gutted foundation of a halted skyscraper project, a purple miasma swirled. I closed my eyes, extending my senses. I was trained to detect the foul stench of mordredic sorcery, the specific spiritual signature of those who would stop Arthur's return.
"I sense malice," I whispered to the elderly woman standing beside me. "A heavy, ancient greed."
The woman was Genkai. She was not of our Order, but a master of the Spirit Wave, a reluctant ally we had called upon because the spiritual pressure below was crushing our own knights. She stood with her hands in her pockets, her pink clothing stark against the grey night.
But it wasn't Genkai who answered. It was the young man sitting on the ledge, dangling his legs over the abyss as if he were waiting for a bus.
"Yusuke Urameshi," I said, a hint of annoyance in my voice. "This is not the time for casual observation."
Yusuke hopped down, slicking back his hair. He looked at the pit, his expression uncharacteristically serious. He pointed a finger at the figure standing in the center of the swirling purple energy below.
"You guys are looking at the power level," Yusuke said, interrupting my meditation. "But there's something off about our new enemy."
He turned to his teacher.
"It's not what I sensed, though, Genkai," Yusuke continued, his voice dropping low. "It's what I didn't sense. Like who I was looking at wasn't the real thing."
I frowned. "Not the real thing? That is a high-level demon down there."
"No," Yusuke shook his head. "It’s a hollow shell. Empty. No heartbeat, no soul. Just a puppet."
Genkai stepped forward, her eyes narrowing behind a sudden flare of pink spiritual energy. She peered into the pit, looking past the physical and into the spiritual reality. Her face paled.
"The dimwit is right," she muttered.
"Hey!" Yusuke protested.
"That isn't a living demon," Genkai said, ignoring him. "That is a vessel. That is the Fallen Dragon Red."
I froze. "Impossible. The Fallen Dragon was a myth from the 12th century. A knight who consumed dragon blood and went mad. He was destroyed."
"I thought he was long gone, too," Genkai said grimly. "But he didn't die. He shed his humanity to become pure energy. He is underground, right beneath that husk we see."
She pointed a wrinkled finger at the center of the construction site.
"He is digging the tunnel to Demon World," she explained. "But not for an invasion. He is digging for Dark Gems."
My blood ran cold. The archives of the Bear spoke of Dark Gems—crystallized remnants of the darkest layer of the underworld. They were anti-light.
"If he gets those gems," I realized, "he creates a permanent eclipse of the spiritual realm."
"Exactly," Yusuke said, cracking his knuckles. A blue aura began to glow around his finger. "If he blocks out the light, your King Arthur guy doesn't have a beacon to come back to. No enlightenment. Just a whole lot of dark ages."
"He is using the puppet up here to distract us while he mines from below," Genkai added. "We have to bypass the shell and hit the source."
I drew my sword, the steel singing in the rain. "If Arthur cannot return, then we are the only light left."
Yusuke grinned, that trademark cocky smirk returning to his face. He leveled his finger at the pit.
"Fine by me," Yusuke said. "I was getting bored anyway. Let's go wake up a dragon."
