The tension in the room was suffocating, but for the first time in history, it wasn't because they were at each other's throats. Forced into a corner by a darkness that threatened to erase both Earth and Meridian, the most unlikely alliance in the multiverse had gathered in the damp cellar of the Silver Dragon.

Will Vandom spread a flickering map of Meridian across a crate, her hands trembling slightly. "If the Shadow Master isn't the beast we fought in Heatherfield... if that was just a distraction... then who is leading them?" she asked, her eyes searching the ancient artifacts for a clue they might have missed.

The Unlikely Front Line
Phobos, usually the picture of regal arrogance, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Yusuke Urameshi. The Spirit Detective was leaning against the wall, casually tightening the laces on his boots, though his jaw was set tight.

"I’ve scouted the perimeter," Phobos stated, his voice tight. "I have discovered an inversion point—a tear in reality pulsing between the Castle and this very bookstore. Once we secure Elyon, we must bring her into our fold for her own protection. She is the only one with the raw power to seal it."

"Yeah, well, we better move fast," Yusuke added, a blue spark of Spirit Gun energy flickering at his fingertip. "I’ve felt the signatures of Doryu and Haru Glory nearby. They aren't the Shadow Master, but they're hunting the same rift. We’ve got to watch our backs."

Strategy and Discord
Irma Lair and Hay Lin were busy hovering over the artifacts, using air and water to clean the grime off a series of Meridian soul-stones.

"Enough with the pleasantries!" Hiei hissed from the darkest corner of the room. The Jagan Eye on his forehead was uncovered, twitching with agitation. "There are hundreds of gangs out there—demons and scavengers alike—trying to fill the vacuum left by the Shadow Guard. If we don't act, the Shadow Master’s leftovers will tear this city apart before he even shows his face."

Hiei stepped into the light, his hand on the hilt of his sword. "We should release the political prisoners from the pits. We need numbers, Phobos. Even if they're criminals, they can swing a blade."

The Breaking Point
PHOBOS POUNDED THE TABLE, the wood splintering under his hand.

"Do you realize the severity of what you’re suggesting?" he yelled, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "You would unleash the dregs of the pits into a city already on the brink? We are trying to save Meridian, not burn it!"

"Wait!" Sakura Avalon interrupted, her voice small but sharp. She was holding her sealing wand, the head of it glowing a frantic, rhythmic pink.

Everyone froze. The air in the cellar suddenly turned freezing cold, and the shadows on the walls began to stretch upward, disconnected from the people casting them.

"Don't you sense that?" Sakura whispered, her eyes wide with dread. "Something strange... something ancient. The Shadow Master isn't coming from the castle. He’s already here."

The Heart of Kandrakar flared a blinding purple, and Will felt a cold shiver run down her spine. The "beast" they knew was a puppet; the puppeteer was finally pulling the strings from within the room.
