SACRED WING: THE ALTOMARE CATASTROPHE — Soul Dew of the Abyss & The Price of Blood
The heavy oak door of Headmistress Faragonda’s office stood before them, its etched runes glowing with a faint, reassuring aura that felt lightyears removed from the damp, suffocating shadow of the Shadowhaunt.
"I wonder if it's worth bothering Faragonda over a possible Avalon double," Tecna muttered, her fingers twitching instinctively as if missing the clear digital readouts of her usual scanners. The residual dark magic in the air made her technology sputter with static. She turned her sharp gaze toward the red-haired fairy standing beside her. "Fairy of Technology logic dictates we exercise extreme caution, Bloom. If the man currently teaching in Alfea's halls isn't who he claims to be..."
"We don't have a choice, Tecna," Bloom said, her voice tight with a mix of exhaustion and rising tension. "I must speak to Faragonda."
Beside them, standing in the dim light of the corridor, was a man whose pale face and tattered white robes bore the unmistakable scars of prolonged imprisonment. His wings hung limply, stripped of their usual pristine luster.
Tecna crossed her arms, analyzing him with unyielding eyes. "You've been trapped in Lord Darkar's dungeon for how long? So you claim to be the real Professor Avalon... but can you prove it?"
The pale man closed his eyes briefly, leaning against the cold stone wall. "I don't blame your skepticism, Fairy of Technology. Darkar’s sorcery is insidious. But if you do not alert Faragonda immediately, the imposter who walks these halls under my name will finish the task Darkar set for him."
Bloom’s heart hammered against her ribs. The horrifying truth was settling in like ice. "We have a spy in our midst," she whispered, looking back at Tecna. "If I remember correctly, he first showed up in Darkar's cavern... He was there right when we needed him, perfectly timed to gain our trust."
"And while we were looking at the sky, the true threat was already inside the gates," a deeper, harsher voice spoke from the shadows behind them.
Hiei stepped into the flickering torchlight, his dark cloak wrapped tightly around his slight frame. His fiery Jagan eye was concealed beneath his bandanna, but his visible crimson eye burned with an intense, brooding focus. In his hand, he held a thick, leather-bound tome covered in ancient, interlocking glyphs—an artifact salvaged from the deepest vault of the Shadowhaunt before Darkar’s domain collapsed.
"Did you find what you were looking for?" Bloom asked, looking at the dark-haired warrior.
Hiei held up the heavy book, his thumb tracing the worn gold leafing on the spine. "This is it. This is the book that tells all about Latias and Latios... but the last chapter is what's really amazing."
Tecna stepped closer, peering at the strange, archaic diagrams visible on the open pages—drawings of legendary winged Eon beings interwoven with intricate, clockwork gears and ancient magical seals. "It's an ancient codex... a hybrid of biological magic and lost engineering."
"A book about Animorphic winged monsters, angels, fairies, and demons," Hiei murmured, his voice dropping into a low, harsh rhythm. "And how to operate a mechanical creature... something called the Defense Mechanism of Altomare."
He closed the book with a heavy thud, the dust floating into the magical light of the hallway. For a moment, none of them spoke. The weight of the impending storm hung over all of them—the imposter in Alfea, the lingering shadows of Darkar's scheme, and the mysterious blueprint of a weapon or guardian designed for a world none of them fully understood yet.
Hiei stared down at his gloved hand, slowly clenching it into a fist.
"I've spent most of my life fighting, being angry," Hiei said softly, his tone carrying a rare, raw weight that made even Tecna pause. "But for what? I gave all I had against Lord Darkar and Sensui... but it was for their reasons."
Bloom watched him silently, recognizing the profound, quiet agony of someone searching for a soul after a lifetime of being used as a weapon.
"What's my reason?" Hiei continued, looking past the fairies toward the high, arched windows of Alfea overlooking the starlit grounds. "What's my reason to reconcile my identity? And although King Raizen is gone... I have yet to determine what part he played in my story, and what my purpose is."
Bloom stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on Hiei's shoulder. He tensed slightly, but he didn't pull away.
"We figure out our purpose by protecting the truth," Bloom said quietly. "Starting right behind this door."
With a firm nod from Tecna and a heavy breath from the real Avalon, Bloom turned the brass handle and pushed open the doors to Faragonda’s chamber.
