The campfire smoke twisted into the shape of a dragon, mirroring the gravity of the gathering. Beneath the ancient, gnarled boughs of the Sacred Tree, worlds seemed to collide. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and spirit energy.

​The Great Dog General, Toga, stood with his back to the flames, his silver hair flowing like a river of moonlight. He looked upon the two brothers who stood in uneasy silence.

​The Legacy of the Blade

​"I speak to the young braves so they may know of the old ways," Toga began, his voice a deep resonance that shook the earth. "I speak so they may know what this land holds of the spirits of the past. In the dawn of our kin, when a young man was ready to become a warrior, it was here he would be tested. If he had faith in the Great One—the source of all life—the blades and arrows of his enemies would not harm him. They would pass through him like mist."

​He turned his amber gaze toward Sesshomaru and Inuyasha.

​"You have a mission to accomplish, young men," Toga declared. "You carry the blood of the West, but the world is changing. You must learn that power is not found in the edge of a sword, but in the heart that wields it."

​The Unusual Star

​Nearby, leaning against a rock with his hands tucked into his pockets, stood Yusuke Urameshi. He looked out of place in his green school uniform, yet his aura crackled with a blue intensity that rivaled the demons around him.

​"And what about the kid?" Inuyasha growled, gesturing toward Yusuke.

​Toga looked at the Spirit Detective. "He is different. Yusuke, you were born under the influence of an unusual star. Your spirit power is unlike any demon or human I have encountered. You are the bridge."

​Botan hovered nearby on her oar, her blue hair shimmering. She landed softly, her expression turning uncharacteristically solemn. "He's right, Yusuke! You have a mission to accomplish, young man. The barrier between the Spirit World and the Living World is thinning."

​The Path to the West

​The wind began to howl, pulling at Toga’s white furs. He looked toward the horizon, where the mountains of his domain stood like jagged teeth against the sky.

​"The time for talk has ended," Toga said, his form beginning to shimmer as he prepared to take his true shape. "It’s time I return to the Western Province. There are shadows stirring there that require a King’s attention."

​He looked at the unlikely trio—the cold daiyokai, the hot-headed half-demon, and the street-fighting Spirit Detective.

​"Perhaps we are fated to journey down an endless path on the lookout for the enemy," Toga mused. He looked directly at Yusuke. "But you, Urameshi... you have all that’s required to be the detective of the spirit world. Watch the borders. Trust your instincts."

​With a final surge of spiritual pressure, the Great Dog General vanished into a streak of light, leaving the three young men standing in the silence of the woods, the weight of a thousand years now resting on their shoulders.
