The mist over Altomare didn’t just feel cold; it felt heavy, like the weight of a thousand years pressing down on the canal streets.
Ash Ketchum ran his hand along the weathered stone of a secret pedestal hidden deep within the city’s archives. Beside him, an unlikely council had gathered: the spirit detective Yusuke Urameshi, the sorcerer Prince Phobos, the King of Games Yugi Muto, and the legendary warrior Takuya Kanbara.
The Secret of the Soul Dew
"It’s all in this book," Ash said, his voice dropping to a whisper. He pointed to the ancient text sprawled across the altar. "This describes the most powerful weapon ever built. It’s powered by the Soul Dew—the gem that contains the essence of a Latios."
He gestured toward the towering Pokemon statues guarding the courtyard. "Those aren't just art. They’re the Guardians of Altomare. They watch over the town... I learned that when I was here years ago."
Prince Phobos leaned in, his eyes narrowed with a mix of curiosity and greed. "A weapon powered by a soul? That’s a level of alchemy even my world hasn't perfected."
Yugi Muto looked uneasy, his hand hovering over his Millennium Puzzle. "Do they really exist? The guardians?"
"They say they do," Ash replied, "but they only show themselves when the city is in its darkest hour."
The Shadow in the Mist
Just as Ash finished his sentence, the temperature plummeted. The lanterns lining the canal flickered and died, plunging the archives into a suffocating gloom.
A voice, cold and raspy like dry leaves skittering across a grave, whispered directly into their ears:
"Nightmare Syndrome... fresh young minds... they won't have sweet dreams tonight..."
The air turned thick with a purple haze. Yusuke Urameshi immediately dropped into a fighter’s stance, his finger glowing with a faint blue light.
"Did you feel that?" Yusuke barked, his eyes darting toward the rafters. "I think we’re being watched."
Takuya Kanbara reached for his D-Tector, the device humming with heat. "It’s not just a feeling, Yusuke. Something is feeding off the fear in this room. That voice... it sounded like it was tasting our thoughts."
Yugi felt a chill run down his spine. The Millennium Puzzle began to glow with a frantic, rhythmic pulse. "This isn't just a guardian or a thief. Whatever is out there is looking for the Soul Dew—and it wants to use our nightmares to unlock it."
The Confrontation
The statues outside groaned. For a moment, it seemed as though the stone wings of the Latios and Latias monuments were twitching in the moonlight.
"If that weapon is as powerful as you say, Ash," Phobos said, summoning a swirl of dark energy in his palm, "we’d better find it before our 'watcher' decides to introduce himself."
A low, guttural laugh echoed through the halls, and the shadows on the floor began to stretch and rise like living ink.
