The mist clung to the jagged cliffs of Duelist Kingdom like a physical weight. Yugi Mutou gripped the strap of his duel disk, his violet eyes fixed on the towering spires ahead.

​"That castle... it’s got to belong to Pegasus," Yugi muttered, his voice tight with a mix of determination and dread.

​Beside him, Yusuke Urameshi—temporarily out of his own universe and sporting his signature green spirit-detective blazer—squinted through the haze. He wasn't much for card games, but he knew the scent of a demon’s playground when he smelled it.

​"What do you see, Yusuke?" Yugi asked, noticing the detective's sudden tension.

​"I thought I saw Bakura," Yusuke replied, his thumb flicking against his index finger as if readying a Spirit Gun. "The pale kid with the creepy ring. We could use his help on this rescue mission, but I don't like the vibe he's putting off. And where is Seto Kaiba? I haven't seen that high-and-mighty jet fly over in hours."

​Inside the Citadel of Illusion

​Deep within the velvet-lined halls of the castle, Maximillion Pegasus swirled a glass of wine, his Millennium Eye glowing beneath his silver hair. He wasn't alone. Standing in the shadows was Prince Phobos, the usurper of Meridian, looking deeply unimpressed by the mortal’s flair for drama.

​"With proper incentive, anyone will play my game," Pegasus chuckled, his voice a smooth, melodic purr.

​Phobos turned his back on the eccentric host. His mind was elsewhere—on the girl he needed to manipulate and the throne he intended to keep.

​The Serpent's Deceit

​In the lower gardens, beneath the weeping willows, the shapeshifter Cedric leaned toward a confused and trembling Elyon. His voice was a poisonous honey, dripping with feigned sympathy.

​"Don't you see how this explains everything?" Cedric hissed, his eyes slitting like a cobra’s. "You were born in Meridian, a wonderful kingdom stolen from you. Your life in this world was a lie."

​He gestured toward the castle spires where Phobos stood. "Your brother, Phobos, is the only one who truly understands your power. The Guardians... they are merely jailers trying to keep you from your birthright."

​But the manipulation was interrupted. A sudden surge of dark energy erupted from the courtyard. Phobos had descended, his face a mask of cold fury as he confronted the "guests" Pegasus had invited to his island.

​Cedric’s form shifted, his tail thrashing against the stone floor. He turned his gaze from Elyon to the Prince, his loyalty finally curdling into a challenge.

​"Phobos," Cedric spat, "you can either defeat me and climb the tower to save your sister yourself... or be dragged there when you stop breathing."

​The wicked serpent loomed large, his scales shimmering with dark magic. Phobos stood his ground, a sneer forming on his regal lips. "You forget your place, worm."

​From the bushes, Yugi and Yusuke watched the scene unfold.

​"Well," Yusuke cracked his knuckles, a blue aura beginning to flicker around his hand. "I don't know who's the bad guy here, but I’m pretty sure we’re gonna have to hit something."

​"We have to get to Elyon," Yugi said, drawing a card. "The Heart of the Cards will guide us through this maze."
