Crimson Fate: The Ruby of Deltora – Legend of the Black Dragon

The air in the Shadowlands didn't just feel cold; it felt heavy, as if the darkness itself had weight. Jasmine, usually the most fearless of the group, gripped the hilt of her dagger, her eyes darting toward the twisted obsidian trees.
"I am afraid," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the moaning wind. "I have an uneasy feeling we're not alone."
Leif, Haru Glory, and Jill the Knight came to a halt. Jill, clad in silver armor that seemed dulled by the oppressive gloom, raised her claymore. They had been sent on a desperate mission to destroy the dragon Druagga, but the atmosphere suggested a threat far more insidious than a dragon’s fire.
"Stay sharp," Jill commanded, his eyes scanning the ridges. Haru Glory tightened his grip on his staff, his knuckles white.
Just then, a rhythmic thrumming vibrated against Leif's waist. It was the Belt of Deltora. As he looked down, the words of the ancient lore leaped into his mind like a strike of lightning:
The Ruby, red as blood, grows pale in the presence of evil or when misfortune threatens.
Leif pulled back his tunic to reveal the heavy medallion. The Ruby, which usually glowed with the deep, vibrant crimson of a guttering fire, was draining of its color. Before their eyes, it turned a sickly, translucent pink, then a ghostly white.
"It’s here," Leif warned, his heart hammering against his ribs.
The Unveiling
The Ruby began to pulse, not with light, but with a directional pull. The red shield housing the gem vibrated, acting as a compass against the dark. Leif followed the sensation, leading the group toward a jagged rock formation that looked like a clutching hand.
As they rounded the bend, the temperature plummeted.
There, bathed in a sickly violet aura, stood the evil wizard Diva. He was draped in robes that seemed to swallow the light, his face a mask of ancient, cruel ambition. But he was not alone. Behind him hovered a shimmering, translucent terror—The Phantom.
The Phantom’s eyes were hollow pits of frost, and its form wavered like smoke in a gale. It was the ultimate guard, a creature that existed between worlds, waiting for Diva’s command to strike.
"You seek the dragon," Diva sneered, his voice sounding like dry parchment rubbing together. "But you have found your grave instead."
Leif stepped forward, the pale Ruby now glowing with a frantic, warning light. The hunt for Druagga had been a trap, and the true battle for Deltora’s soul was about to begin.
