Sorceress Tagan: The Iron Petal of Nicodemus
The air in the Underworld didn't move; it stagnated, heavy with the scent of ancient dust and dampened spirits. Leaf, the Knight of Deltora, stood before an unlikely assembly: Jak, the street-smart survivor; Nicodemus, the regal King of the Rats; and Yusuke Urameshi, who still smelled of the living world’s ozone.
Leaf reached into a velvet pouch and withdrew four stones, laying them upon a jagged rock.
The Emerald: A vibrant, grassy green.
The Amethyst: A deep, regal purple.
The Opal: Shifting with every color of the rainbow.
The Ruby: A brilliant, searing red.
"The gems have their meanings," Leaf whispered, his eyes fixed on the final stone. "But the Ruby is the heart. It is the symbol of happiness, red as the blood that beats within us. Yet..." He gestured to the stone. The brilliant crimson was beginning to drain, replaced by a sickly, milky grey. "It grows pale in the presence of evil or misfortune. There is something foul nearby."
The Burden of the Spirit Detective
Yusuke looked at the fading gem, then at the ghostly silhouette of his father, King Raizen, who flickered like a dying candle in the gloom.
"There's more you need to know," Leaf continued, his voice tight. "The politics of this realm are a labyrinth. In the past, I fought with Tagan and Yomi just for the sake of the brawl—the heat of the moment. But the board has shifted. You can find common ground with Tagan, but beware of Yomi. His ambition is a void that no peace treaty can fill."
Raizen’s spirit began to dissolve into the grey mist of the Underworld. He reached out a translucent hand toward Yusuke.
"This is your inheritance, and your duty," Raizen’s voice echoed, sounding like grinding tectonic plates. "Lead them well, my son."
With those final words, the King faded into nothingness.
The Shadow Approaches
As Raizen vanished, the Ruby on the rock turned completely white, the color of a bleached bone.
"Nicodemus, get your scouts to the perimeter," Leaf ordered, drawing his sword. The steel caught the faint, dying light of the opal. "Jak, stay low. Yusuke... you heard your father. The 'misfortune' the Ruby warned us about isn't coming—it’s already here."
From the darkness of the cavernous tunnels, a rhythmic thudding began. It wasn't footsteps; it was the heartbeat of the Underworld itself, reacting to a presence that even the Knight of Deltora feared.
"Yomi," Yusuke muttered, his fist sparking with blue Spirit Gun energy. "If he wants a fight, he’s picked a hell of a day for it."
The four companions stood their ground, the colorless Ruby sitting between them—a silent, pale witness to the war that was about to begin.
