Mystery of the Silent Forest: Epyon’s Lunar Shadow

The humidity of the Forest of Silence didn’t just hang in the air; it felt like a physical weight, pressing against their lungs. Leaf pushed aside a jagged, black-barked limb that bled a thick, ink-like sap.

"That monster lives in a cave? Well, that settles it," Leaf whispered, her eyes darting toward the obsidian ridge looming ahead. "While it’s out searching for food, we’ll search the cave."

Hero Yui leaned against a stone that seemed to pulse with a faint, sickly rhythm. He wiped grime from his forehead, his face twisted in a permanent scowl. "You make it sound like we’re raiding a pantry, Leaf. The object we’re searching for is in the most dangerous, darkest part of this hellscape. There’s a guardian there that even the trees fear."

"The Dark," Sheynne Rainstorm added. He stood a few paces back, his silhouette almost blending into the shifting shadows. "That’s what they call it. It isn’t just a creature; it’s an absence."

Leaf turned her gaze toward him, her eyes narrowing. She had been silent about it for miles, but the tension was reaching a breaking point. "Why are you even involved, Sheynne? Is it the boy... or the arms?"

She pointed a gloved finger at his shoulder. As the dim light shifted, the collar of Sheynne’s tunic slipped, revealing a jagged, obsidian-colored mark on his skin.

"He has a birthmark of the shadow of the moon," Leaf said, her voice dropping to a cautious hiss. "He could be a descendant of the evil race. The ones who built the Shadow Spire."

Sheynne didn't flinch. "He does not choose the blood in his veins," he replied coolly. "Does it matter where I came from if I'm the only one who can navigate the gloom?"

"It matters to me," Yui muttered, kicking a loose pebble into the abyss of the cave mouth. "But then again, look at us. A marked man, a desperate scout, and a disgraced 'savior.'"

Leaf looked at Yui, her expression softening into something like pity. "You used to care, Yui. You were the one the prophecies spoke of."

Yui let out a harsh, jagged laugh that echoed too loudly against the silent trees. "The prophecies? They threw me out the moment I stopped being their perfect little puppet. They can rot for all I care. I’m through saving the world."

The Threshold of the Dark

They reached the mouth of the cavern just as the sun—a pale, useless disc—dipped below the horizon. The "Forest of Silence" finally lived up to its name; even the wind seemed to die at the cave’s entrance.
