Phantom Book: Moon of The Blue Rose

The neon lights of the lower sectors flickered, casting long, jagged shadows against the rusted metal of the ventilation shafts. A massive, cylindrical unit hummed with a low, vibrating thrum that rattled the floorboards.

"Look at that," Leaf whispered, shielding his eyes from the static discharge. "Is it another cooling device or something? The power draw is immense."

Inspector Kiel adjusted his spectacles, his gaze drifting from the machinery to the scarred skyline of the kingdom beyond the reinforced glass. "These fights have totally ruined the infrastructure, Leaf. But it’s been going on for years now. The kingdom is more machine and battlefield than home."

"What's the big idea with the Gundam fighter anyway?" Leaf asked, his hand instinctively brushing the hilt of the belt at his waist. "Why allow such destruction?"

Kiel sighed, a weary sound that seemed to echo the city’s own fatigue. "These are the times we live in. I’ve had a lot of time to learn the ropes of this bureaucracy, and believe me, I’ve seen it all. Power like that isn't just a weapon; it's a political statement."

Nearby, leaning against a stack of crates, Heero Yuy remained unmoving, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon where the silhouette of a massive mobile suit stood like a silent sentinel. He turned his head slightly as Kiel approached.

"Are you interested in the Belt, or the boy?" Heero asked, his voice devoid of emotion.

Kiel paused. "I’m interested in a warrior. A power like the one he carries is rare. He has a birthmark in the shape of the shadow of the moon—exactly like the ancient legends of the Shadow Lord."

Heero looked back toward the darkness of the sector. "Then you're looking for trouble. I’ve traveled through the furthest reaches of the colonies and the wastes, and I’ve never seen a place as dark as this."

Leaf stepped forward, looking down into the abyss of the lower levels where the sunlight never reached. The air felt heavy, thick with the smell of ozone and damp earth.

"That’s why they call it the Dark, I guess," Leaf told the group, his voice steady despite the gloom. "But even in the Dark, shadows only exist because there's a light somewhere behind them. We just have to find it."
