Shadow Lord: Requiem for the Chasm of Dreams
The history of Deltora was written in the steady glow of the Seven Gems. For centuries, the Topaz, Ruby, Opal, Lapis Lazuli, Emerald, Amethyst, and Diamond had pulsed with a collective light that held the Shadow Lord at bay. Life had not always been this way; there was a time when the kingdom knew peace and prosperity, and all seven tribes lived in harmony under the gems' protection.
Then, the Shadow Lord’s greedy eye turned toward the kingdom, and the belt was shattered.
The Arrival of Raizen
Into this fractured world stepped a man named Raizen. He claimed to be a savior, a wanderer from the outer lands with the strength to push back the Grey Guards. But as Lief stood in the flickering torchlight of a rebel hideout, watching Raizen sharpen a blade that seemed to drink the light around it, a cold shiver traced his spine.
"I sensed it the moment we met," Lief whispered to Jasmine and Barda. "There’s something dangerous about him."
"He’s a warrior, Lief," Barda countered, though his hand remained habitually on the hilt of his sword. "We need steel if we’re going to reclaim the Diamond."
"It’s not what I sensed, though," Lief muttered, his eyes narrowing as Raizen laughed at a joke—a sound that didn't quite reach his eyes. "It’s what I didn’t sense. It’s like who I saw wasn't the real thing. If our old enemies were all about the fastball—pure, blunt force—this guy definitely likes the curve."
The Shadow of Deception
Raizen moved with a grace that felt practiced, almost theatrical. He was a void where a soul should be, a master of the "curve" who fought with misdirection and whispers rather than the honest brutality of the Shadow Lord's usual monsters.
Lief felt the weight of the Belt of Deltora against his waist. It was mostly empty, a hollow promise of a kingdom that once was. He looked toward Phobos, a grim-faced rebel leader who had been pushing for an all-out assault on the nearby garrison.
"I did what you suggested, Phobos," Lief told the rest of the group, his voice low and steady as he fastened the Belt of Deltora. He felt the familiar, faint warmth of the few gems they had already recovered, but it wasn't enough to quell his unease. "The message has been sent to the resistance cells in the shifted woods."
The Weight of the Rebellion
Lief looked back at Raizen, who was now deep in conversation with a group of young, wide-eyed rebels. The stranger was spinning tales of easy victories, luring them in with the promise of a Deltora that could be bought with blood and cleverness rather than the virtues the gems represented.
"They’re already too involved with the rebels for their own good," Lief whispered, more to himself than his companions.
He knew the cost of trust in a land governed by shadows. If Raizen was a "curveball," Lief had to be the one to catch it before it shattered the last hope the seven tribes had left.
