Legend of the Shifting Sands: The Dark Prince’s Descent
The heavy iron gate of the Underworld's deepest cell groaned, a sound like grinding teeth that echoed through the damp, obsidian halls. Hades leaned against the bars, his eyes burning with a cold, flickering fire.
"Let’s cut to the chase," the Lord of the Dead drawled, his voice smooth as silk but sharp as a razor. "I let you out of this miserable hole if you fight Hercules in the Coliseum to the death. It’s a simple trade: your freedom for his blood."
A shadow moved within the cell, the clank of rusted chains cutting through the silence. A figure stepped into the sliver of light—a warrior with spiked hair and a jacket bearing a stark cross on the back. He didn't look intimidated; he looked bored.
"Yeah, well, here’s the thing," the warrior replied, narrowing his eyes. "This is my story. And you? You aren't part of it."
Before Hades could snap his fingers to summon a swarm of shadows, the reality of the dungeon began to shimmer and peel away like wet parchment. The dark, oppressive stone gave way to a blistering heat and the smell of dry dust.
"We know that the Shifting Sands isn't a very pleasant place," Prince Phobos added, his voice dripping with aristocratic disdain as he scanned the endless desert horizon.
Lief, the Knight of Deltora, stood beside him, his hand resting firmly on the hilt of his sword. He ignored the prince’s complaining, his gaze fixed on the horizon where the heat haze played tricks on the eyes. The transition from the depths of the earth to the vast, golden wasteland had been jarring, but there was no time to dwell on the God of the Dead’s petty bargains.
"Pleasant or not, it's where we are," Lief said, his voice steady. "Hades is a memory now. We have a different kind of monster to track in these sands."
Far off in the distance, a massive shape moved beneath the dunes—a dragon, its scales glinting like polished brass under the relentless sun. The warrior with the white hair and the cross-marked jacket stepped forward, leaving the ghosts of the Underworld behind. The real battle wasn't in a Coliseum; it was here, in the shifting heart of the world.
