Knights of the Blue Sky: The Kandrakar Chronicles — Light of the Shattered Heart

The rain lashed against the jagged spires of the Dark Bastion, but inside the throne room, the atmosphere was even colder.

Haru stood in the center of the hall, his grip tightening on a blade that felt far too heavy for his trembling hands. Opposite him, the gallery was filled with figures who seemed to delight in his uncertainty.

The Cost of Altruism

"All this altruism is giving me the warm and fuzzies," Xigbar drawled, leaning against a marble pillar with his usual sarcastic smirk. He toyed with one of his arrowguns, spinning it idly. "But tell me—does having a heart of light come with a good insurance policy? Because from where I’m standing, you’re looking a little... uncovered."

Haru didn't look up. "It’s not about me."

"Typical," Xigbar chuckled, his lone eye glinting. "No good will come from putting the enemy first. It’s a fast track to a shallow grave, kid."

The Path to Destiny

From the shadows near the back of the hall, Shiba stepped forward. Unlike the others, his voice lacked malice, carrying instead the weight of ancient exhaustion.

"Ignore him, Haru,"  he said softly. "Find the hearts joined to yours. At the end, you'll finally see what destiny has in store for you. But be warned—you cannot defeat the enemy as you are now. Not until you truly believe in what you're fighting for."

The air in the room suddenly turned frigid. A sharp, rhythmic clicking of boots echoed against the stone floor as a regal figure draped in dark silks emerged from the high dais.

Treason and Trials

"I hope you are aware, Shiba, that such treasonous talk could have dire consequences," Prince Phobos interjected, his voice a silk-wrapped blade. He looked down at Haru with a mixture of pity and disgust.

Phobos gestured toward the rack behind the throne where seven legendary blades hummed with elemental power. Haru’s eyes drifted toward the one glowing with a soft, azure light.

"I'm sorry," Phobos said, his lip curling into a sneer, "but you don't deserve one of the seven magic swords yet. A weapon responds to conviction, Haru. Right now, all I see is a boy playing at being a hero with a heart full of holes."

Haru looked at his reflection in the polished floor. He wasn't a hero—not yet. But as he thought of the faces of those he’d left behind, he felt a faint, rhythmic pulse in his chest. The "insurance" Xigbar mocked wasn't a policy; it was a connection.
