Ghost in the Shelling: Pure Stone & the Forest of Lost Souls

The wind across the jagged peaks of Mount Dread carried the scent of ozone and ancient decay.
Will Vandom pulled her cloak tighter, her knuckles white around the glowing Heart of Kandrakar. Next to her, Elyon Brown scanned the foggy abyss below with steady, regal eyes. They were royalty of Meridian, bound by blood to both the Light of Meridian and the throne—a connection made complicated by the third sibling walking in their shadow. Prince Phobos trailed behind them, his silver hair catching the bleak mountain light, his face an unreadable mask of cold, quiet ambition.
"Keep moving," growled Hunter Steele. The Earth Lad adjusted the straps on Shadow’s saddle, the giant turquoise arachnid chittering nervously as its eight legs picked through the crumbling rock. "Deltora doesn't give second chances to slow walkers."
"It's not the walking I object to," muttered Eustace Scrubb, wincing as a sharp pebble poked through his worn boot. "It's the complete lack of proper tea, civilized roads, or sensible geography. First we're in a woods that turns you into a donkey, now we're climbing a mountain in a land named after misery."
"Oh, stop whining, Eustace," Edmund Pevensie said, his hand resting casually on the pommel of his Narnian broadsword. "You survived being a dragon. A bit of hiking won't kill you."
"That was different," Eustace huffed. "That was a transformative moral experience. This is just blisters."
The unlikely company had been brought together by a cataclysmic fracture in the veil between worlds. The Veil of Kandrakar had ruptured, spilling dangerous cosmic energy across dimensions and shattering the Great Spirit Gems—three primordial stones that maintained the balance between light, shadow, and nature. If they weren't reunited, Deltora would fall to shadow, Narnia would fade into myth, and Kandrakar would collapse into the void.
Their journey had already taken them through the shifting, dangerous wilderness of Deltora. Deep within the Lake of Tears, Hunter and Shadow had driven off a swarm of Ak-Baba, allowing Will to use the Heart's elemental fire to unlock the first treasure: the Ruby of the Wild Spirit, a blazing gem that pulsed like a living heart.
Now, their path led them toward a convergence fold—a rare tear in reality where the borders of Deltora bled directly into the borderlands of Narnia.
"There," Phobos said, his voice smooth as silk, pointing a gloved finger toward a archway of ancient, moss-draped stone nestled in the cliffside. "The Passage of the Deep Magic. Beyond it lies the Eastern Sea of Narnia."
Elyon stepped forward, her hand instinctively catching Will's arm. "Be careful, Phobos. The magic of Aslan's realm doesn't respond well to tyranny or deceit. If you try to claim the gem for yourself—"
"Dear sister," Phobos interrupted, a thin, aristocratic smile gracing his lips. "I am a changed man. Or have you forgotten that our shared blood is the only key capable of unlocking the portal? We need each other. How terribly poetic."
Will narrowed her eyes at her older brother, but she couldn't deny the truth. It took the three of them—Will’s pure energy, Elyon’s light, and Phobos’s mastery over shadow—to stabilize the dimensional tears.
Together, the three siblings approached the archway. Will held up the Heart, Elyon raised her glowing hands, and Phobos summoned a thread of dark violet aura. The three energies intertwined, striking the stone. Reality folded, the smell of mountain dust replaced in an instant by the salty breeze of an ocean sky.
They stepped through onto a beach of blinding white sand. Before them stretched the sapphire waters of Narnia’s Eastern Sea, where the tide rolled against the shore with a sound like whispering voices.
"Narnia," Edmund murmured, his eyes shining with a deep, nostalgic warmth. "It's good to be home."
"Don't get cozy," Hunter said, leaping down from Shadow's back. "Look."
In the center of the bay, resting atop a glass-like pillar rising from the sea, floated the Sapphire of the Tide Spirit. It radiated a cool, calm light that soothed the roaring waves around it. But guarding the pillar was a towering creature of swirl and sea-foam—a Wave Sentinel summoned by the realm's wild magic to test those who sought the gem.
"I've got this!" Hunter yelled, raising his Manacle. "Spider Rider, go!"
With a burst of speed, Shadow lunged forward, shooting a strand of steel-strong silk toward the cliff above the ocean. Hunter swung across the water, sword drawn, drawing the Sentinel's wrath. The water giant roared, crashing down with a fist made of a hundred tons of ocean water.
"Edmund, Eustace, with me!" Will commanded, her back sprouting ethereal pink wings as she took to the air. She slammed her hands together, unleashing a torrent of lightning to freeze the water sentinel's arm into solid ice.
Edmund drew his sword, leaping from a rock onto the monster's icy arm, shattering it with a precise, kingly strike. Eustace, wielding a short blade with surprising grit, covered Edmund's flank, cutting through the smaller water-sprites breaking off from the main beast.
"Now, Elyon!" Will shouted.
Elyon closed her eyes, channeling the vast, golden Light of Meridian. A beam of pure radiance erupted from her palm, piercing the Sentinel's chest. The creature dissolved back into normal sea spray, leaving the path to the Sapphire clear.
Phobos glided across the water on a platform of dark magic, reaching out a hand toward the glowing blue gem. "At last..."
"Don't even think about keeping it, brother," Will warned, hovering directly over his head, lightning crackling between her fingers.
Phobos chuckled, pulling his hand back slightly. "Direct as always, little sister. I merely intended to secure it for our final leap." He caught the Sapphire as it drifted down, feeling its cool power, before tossing it casually to Edmund. "Hold it, King of Narnia. I find water magic dreadfully damp."
With two gems in their possession—the Ruby of Deltora and the Sapphire of Narnia—the final tear in the world opened above them. A staircase of pure crystal materialized in the sky, winding upward into the clouds toward the legendary fortress of Kandrakar, the heart of the infinite multiverse.
They ascended into the grand, starlit halls of the Temple of Kandrakar. The air was thick with ancient power, but the temple was empty, its guardians paralyzed by the dimensional distortion. In the center of the Great Hall floated the final piece: the Diamond of the Cosmic Spirit, glowing with an blinding, incandescent white light.
As they approached, the three gems began to resonate. The air vibrated violently, threatening to tear the hall apart.
"The resonance is too strong!" Eustace yelled, holding his hands over his ears. "It's going to blow!"
"We have to align them simultaneously!" Will called out over the rushing wind. "Hunter, Edmund, place the Ruby and Sapphire in the altar niches! Elyon, Phobos, give me your power!"
Hunter sprinted forward, jamming the fire-red Ruby into the left pedestal, while Edmund drove the blue Sapphire into the right.
In the center, Will, Elyon, and Phobos stood in a circle beneath the floating Diamond.
"Together," Elyon pleaded, looking at Phobos. "For Meridian. For every realm."
Phobos looked at his sisters. For a fraction of a second, the cold arrogance in his eyes softened into something ancient and mournful. He raised his hands, combining his dark magic with Elyon's light and Will's elemental energy.
A tri-color beam of pink, gold, and violet struck the Diamond of the Cosmic Spirit. The white stone absorbed the energy, sending a shockwave of pure harmony pulsing through the temple, down the crystal stairs to Narnia, and across the mountains of Deltora.
The sky stilled. The tears in reality slowly seamed shut.
The three spirit gems settled into the altar, locked in perfect equilibrium, radiating a calm, steady warmth that healed the fractured worlds.
Eustace let out a long breath, sitting down hard on the pristine floor. "Well. That was thoroughly terrifying. But I suppose... rather extraordinary."
Hunter offered a grin, clapping Edmund on the shoulder. "Not bad for a couple of kings and a spider rider."
Will landed softly beside her siblings. She looked at Elyon, who offered a tired but triumphant smile, and then at Phobos, who was adjusting his velvet cuffs with immaculate composure.
"You didn't betray us," Will said quietly.
"Of course not," Phobos replied, turning his back to look out over the starry expanse of Kandrakar. "Destroying the universe leaves me with terribly little to rule. Besides... family traditions must be upheld, don't you think?"
Elyon rolled her eyes with a faint smile, taking Will's hand. The multiverse was saved, the magic was restored, and for the first time in a very long time, the realm stood united.
