Knights of the Blue Sky: Awakening of the Dark Seal - Battle at Dread Mountain!)
The damp subterranean air of Dread Mountain clung to the stone walls like cold sweat, heavy with the ancient magic of a realm long forgotten. At the center of the cavern, illuminated only by the faint silver luminescence of the Heart of Kandrakar, stood a small, incongruous gathering of leaders from across shattered worlds.
Will Vandom traced her fingers along the jagged runes etched into the cavern wall. Her knuckles were pale, the Heart throbbing against her palm like a nervous second pulse.
"Listen to this," Will whispered, her voice cutting through the heavy silence as she began to read the strange message aloud to the siblings standing beside her—Queen Elyion and Prince Phobos—and their allies, Leif, the King of Deltora, and Haru Glory, the Rave Master.
"Who exactly am I? All is darkness around me. There are only three things that I am sure of: I know that I am a man, I know where I have been, I know what I must do. For now, that has to be enough."
Haru leaned heavily on the hilt of the Ten Commandments sword, his eyes fixed on the cryptic inscription. "Sounds like someone left behind a soul before they lost their mind. It looks like we're not the first ones to make a trip to Dread Mountain."
"No," Leif agreed, his hand resting instinctively on the Belt of Deltora, the ancient gems glittering faintly in response to the dark mountain's dormant ley lines. "And whoever wrote this was driven by a desperate certainty. A man who knew his path even when his identity was stripped away."
"Inspirational," Phobos sneered, crossing his arms, his royal robes brushing against the dust of the cavern floor. "A poet lost in the dark. How thrilling. Can we return to matters that actually threaten our survival?"
Elyion turned sharply toward her brother, her crown gleaming under the subterranean twilight. "Watch your tongue, Phobos. Every stone in this place holds a piece of history we barely understand."
"What I understand," Phobos replied smoothly, his golden eyes narrowing, "is that we are wasting time playing archaeologist while our enemies gather."
"He isn't wrong about the threat, Elyion," Will said, stepping between the royal siblings and turning the Heart of Kandrakar in her hand. Her mind flashed to the ancient guardian force they were up against. "Narissa's been steering clear of us since we got Prince Phobos back on our side. She knows he can take her Seal, and she's terrified of losing her edge."
"Terrified, or patient?" Leif pointed out, his voice grounded in the harsh realities of a king who had fought the Shadow Lord. "Narissa's stronger than ever. Next time the witch attacks, we'll need help safeguarding Prince Phobos. He is both our greatest asset against her Seal and her highest priority target."
"Which brings us back to the elephant in the room," Haru said, glancing toward the darker tunnels where the mountain's deepest vaults lay sealed. "What exactly do you plan to do with Queen Resha Valentine? I hope you are aware that such treasonous talk could have dire consequences if you dare to raise your sword against the Knights of the Blue Sky."
Phobos scoffed, stepping forward with an arrogant flick of his wrist. "The Knights of the Blue Sky are a relic, tethered to a queen who lacks the stomach for the war ahead. You speak of treason as if loyalty to a crumbling crown ever saved a realm. I am the kingdom's only hope, and if releasing Valentine's prisoners secures our victory, then their chains will shatter today."
"What? You want to release more prisoners?" Elyion demanded, her voice ringing with the authority of Meridian's true queen. "Phobos, you don't get to command this alliance. You are here because we need your power against Narissa, not to recruit an army of mercenaries and dark magic users!"
"I grant you one last chance, little sister, so stop grumbling," Phobos snapped, his dark aura flaring outward, rattling the loose pebbles on the cave floor. "I am doing what must be done while the rest of you deliberate like frightened children."
"Careful, Phobos," Haru said quietly, the Rave sword shifting an inch from its sheath, radiating a pristine, warning light. "Raise your power against us, and you'll find out just how fast this alliance can break you."
"Enough!" Will's voice echoed through the cavern, amplified by the Heart of Kandrakar. A wave of pink and golden energy rippled outward, forcing both Phobos and Haru to take a half-step back. She looked at Phobos, then at the Heart pulsing in her palm, its divine light reflecting off the mysterious message on the cave wall.
"I thought permission was required to take a Heart of Kandrakar," Phobos murmured, staring at the orb in Will's hand with a mixture of contempt and faint awe. "Yet here you stand, carrying the ultimate power of the veil into the abyss, deciding the fate of queens and kingdoms."
"Permission comes from balance, Phobos," Will said firmly, holding his gaze. "Not ambition. We aren't here to serve your ego, and we aren't here to start a war with the Knights of the Blue Sky. We're here because whoever wrote this inscription knew that when the darkness closes in, you don't fight it alone."
She turned back to Leif, Haru, and Elyion.
"We safeguard Phobos because we have to," Will continued, her voice steadying the group. "We face Narissa because no one else can. But we do it together—and we leave no one in the dark."
