Legend of the Dreaming Spring: Sigma-44 and the Kandrakar Wind Storm
The cold wind off the Whispering Mountains bit into Caleb's face as he threw his heavy canvas pack onto the damp moss. He looked up at the towering oaks, their branches interlocked like black bone against a bruised twilight sky.
"What do you think about setting up camp here?" Caleb asked, wiping sweat from his forehead.
Will Vandom paused, her hand hovering over her backpack straps. She turned in a slow circle, scanning the thicket. "I don't know... there's something about the trees here. They're completely silent. It's like they're dead. What is that?"
"Not dead," Irma muttered, leaning over a crystal-clear creek that cut through the center of the clearing. She was studying an ancient stone tablet submerged in the running water, its carved runes glowing with a faint, iridescent azure. "Look at this inscription."
Hay Lin hovered just an inch off the ground, peering over Irma’s shoulder. "Read it out loud, Irma."
Irma cleared her throat, tracing the mossy lettering: "'Dreaming spring, drink gentle, strange, and welcome... All of evil will beware.'"
"What does that mean?" Taranee asked, stepping closer to the bank, her glasses reflecting the blue shimmer. "'All of evil will beware'—if an evil person drinks the water, they'll be punished in some way?"
"It’s worse than a punishment," Cornelia said, stepping up beside Will. She looked deeply unnerved by the still grove. "The old legends of Meridian talk about this place. If you drank the water from this stream, whatever you dreamed wasn't a dream, but a vision."
"A vision of what?" Will asked, feeling the Heart of Kandrakar warm against her chest under her jacket.
"A direct representation of the princess's mind and body," Cornelia whispered, her eyes dark with concern. "Elyon."
A few paces upstream, Leif stood with his hand resting heavily on the hilt of his sword. The golden steel of the Belt of Deltora beneath his tunic warm against his ribs, its gems thrumming with a subtle, protective pulse. "The land here feels tainted," Leif noted, his eyes scanning the shadow-draped treeline. "The Belt usually warns me of dark magic, but this stream... it's pure, yet burdened by something far away."
Beside him, Haru Glory unslung the massive, heavy broadsword from his back, resting the tip of the Ten Commandments blade against the damp earth. His spiked hair caught the silver twilight as he rested a hand on his hip. "It feels like Shadow Space magic, or maybe something even older," Haru said, staring down into the running water. "Whatever it is, it's reacting to the energy in the air."
Will’s breath hitched. Meridian’s true heir was miles away, imprisoned in the dark spires of Metamoor, yet her light—and her pain—echoed through the very ley lines of the realm.
Suddenly, the Heart of Kandrakar pulsed intensely, casting a pink-and-silver radiance across the clearing. A dark, theatrical voice echoed through the air—not from the woods, but directly through the magic of the spring. It was the malicious, lingering echo of a scrying spell.
“I’ll get her spirit before the sun sets,” the evil Cedric hissed from the dark depths of the vision, his reptilian voice dripping with cruel confidence.
A high-pitched, mocking laughter followed, chilling the Guardians to the bone.
"So... what are they doing to her?" Prince Phobos asked, stepping silently out from the shadow of the silent oaks. His silver hair fell over dark, analytical eyes as he stared into the glowing waters of the stream, his hands folded neatly behind his back. He showed no fear, only a cold, calculating intensity.
He looked directly at the leader of the Guardians. "Will Vandom... what are they doing to our sister, Queen Elyon?"
Will knelt by the edge of the water, pressing two fingers to the surface. The stream shimmered, projecting an ethereal, translucent map of Meridian above the current. Three brilliant beams of light shot upward toward the canopy.
"Look at those lights," Will said, her voice tight with focus. "Their placement... must be markers for the Rave stones."
Phobos narrowed his eyes, tracking the geometry of the beams. "Those must be the ones I don't have—the ones that are hidden in Symphonia, as well as the third light being the Rave key itself."
"Then Cedric isn't just trying to break Elyon's spirit," Caleb said, unsheathing his sword, the metallic slide ringing loudly through the quiet woods. "He's using her dream-state to open the vault."
Haru tightened his grip on his sword's hilt, a determined grin breaking across his face. "If he thinks he can steal the Rave Key while I'm breathing, he's got another thing coming."
Leif drew his own blade, the ruby on the Belt of Deltora suddenly flaring with vibrant red light, matching the magical glow of the spring. "We ride now," Leif declared, his voice ringing with authority. "We won't let him take her spirit—or the stones."
Will stood up, the Heart of Kandrakar flaring to life in her hand, bathing the silent, dead trees in a torrent of magical energy. "Then we don't have time to set up camp. If that key turns before sunset, Elyon loses everything."
