Legend of the Heart of Kandrakar: Fall of Dred Mountain
The cold mountain wind howled across the high, forgotten trail, pulling at Leif’s cloak as he stared through the twilight at a low, moss-covered structure built directly into the face of the gray stone.
"What is that... who would have made a hut way out here?" Leif asked, running a hand over the weathered wood of the doorway.
Beside him, Prin, the ancient Kin Dragon, lowered his massive head, his molten eyes reflecting the pale moonlight. "I believe it's called a gnome rest, Leif. In the old days, there were gnome rests everywhere across these peaks."
Leif looked back at the ruined shelter, frowning. "But why did they abandon them? Something must have happened that changed the way the gnomes lived on the mountain."
"It's got to be Cedric," a sharp, determined voice cut through the mountain air. Will Vandom stepped forward from the shadow of the treeline, her Guardian crest faintly pulsing. Beside her, Elyion, Queen of Meridian, looked back toward the dark expanse of the valley below, her heart heavy with fear for her family. "We have to warn Prince Phobos."
Will placed a hand on Elyion's shoulder, her own eyes fixed on the horizon where dark magic bled into the clouds. "Speaking of our brother," Will murmured, a grim weight in her voice, "it's beginning. Cedric is preparing for the ceremony. He must capture Prince Phobos's breath for his spirit."
Miles away, within the dim, damp confines of a hidden stone chamber, Prince Phobos stood bound by shimmering dark ley-lines, his expression full of cold disdain despite his capture. He looked up at the towering, shadowed figure looming over him.
"So, are you going to tell me what this is all about, Dr. Black, or do I have to guess?" Phobos said, his voice laced with venomous arrogance.
Dr. Black merely smiled—a slow, terrifying grin—as the ambient shadow essence gathered around them, pulsing to the rhythm of the ritual beginning to take hold.
Days later, the heavy quiet of the citadel hung like a shroud. Elyion and Will stood side by side in the abandoned sanctuary, their boots kicking up dust. On the central table, secured under a heavy silver weight, was a crisp sheet of parchment left behind by the brother they both shared.
Elyion reached out with trembling fingers and unfolded it. She read aloud, her voice cracking as the words echoed in the empty room:
"Will and Elyion,
If you're reading this, it means I have fallen in the battle to protect Kandrakar..."
Before either sister could process the weight of their brother's confession, the heavy wooden doors swung open with a resounding crash. Peter Pevensie stepped inside, his blade drawn, his eyes wide with grim realization.
"It must be Doryu," Peter said, scanning the shadows beyond the doorway, "the Pumpkin King."
