Blood Covenant Escaflowne: Chronicles of the Black Dream Castle
The dimensional tear in the fabric of Neo-Tokyo didn’t open with a roar, but with the distinct, irritating sound of heavy fabric rustling against gravity.
Van Fanel, King of Fanelia, tumbled out of the sky and landed face-first into a pile of discarded cardboard boxes in a Tokyo alleyway. His cape, the pink-lined flannel monstrosity he wore with brooding pride, wrapped around his head like an aggressive blanket.
"Guandji!" Van spat, kicking himself free and drawing his massive, broadsword. "Where is the black dragon? Where is Dilandau?!"
"I don't know who this 'Dilandau' is," a sharp, aristocratic voice echoed from the mouth of the alley, "but if his sense of fashion is as atrocious as yours, I hope he stayed in whatever circus you escaped from."
Van spun around, his golden eyes narrowing. Standing under the neon lights was Seto Kaiba, hands tucked into the pockets of his pristine, floor-length white trench coat. His expression was a mix of profound boredom and intense irritation.
"Who are you?" Van demanded, leveling his sword. "Are you an assassin from Zaibach?"
Kaiba didn't even flinch. He slowly pulled his hand from his pocket, revealing a sleek, metallic Duel Disk strapped to his forearm. "I am Seto Kaiba, CEO of KaibaCorp. And I don't have time to play dress-up with a teenager who thinks a picnic blanket constitutes royalty."
Before Van could lunge, a booming, ancient voice resonated through the narrow street. "Hold, warrior of Fanelia!"
From the shadows stepped Yami Yugi, the Millennium Puzzle gleaming against his chest. His leather-strapped, multi-buckled outfit defied the laws of both gravity and punk rock, and his tricolor hair spiked upward like a crown of daggers. "There is a dark energy binding our worlds together tonight. Violence will not solve this mystery."
Van lowered his sword an inch, blinking. "Your hair... is it a weapon?"
"Hey! No fighting in the local shopping district!"
The trio turned to see a teenage girl sprinting toward them. She wore a sailor suit, massive blonde odango hair-buns, and was currently chewing furiously on a piece of half-eaten toast. She skidded to a halt, panting, before pointing a dramatic finger at them.
"I am the Sailor Guardian who fights for love and for justice! I am Sailor Moon! And in the name of the moon, I will punish you for... for..." Usagi paused, looking at the assembled men. "Wait. Are you guys a visual kei band? Can I get an autograph?"
Kaiba rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Great. A cosplayer, a medieval LARPer, and a midget with a leather fetish. I'm dreaming. I've finally worked myself into a sleep-deprived psychosis."
"This is no dream, Kaiba," Yami Yugi said grimly, his cape flowing majestically despite the total lack of wind in the alley. "A cosmic distortion has pulled us across space and time. Look above!"
They all looked up. The sky wasn't dark; it was a swirling vortex of violet energy, violently fluctuating between the twin moons of Gaea, the neon grids of Domino City, and the stars of the Silver Millennium.
Suddenly, a massive, crystalline shadow materialized from the vortex—a rogue remnant of the Doom Phantom, fused with a corrupted Duel Monster spirit. It roared, sending a shockwave that shattered the windows of a nearby arcade.
"A dragon!" Van yelled, his eyes flashing. He gripped his sword and leaped into the air, his flannel cape billowing. With raw, untamed fury, he slashed at the beast's crystalline leg. The blade struck true, sparks flying, but the monster barely registered the blow, batting Van away with its tail.
"A direct physical assault is useless," Yami Yugi declared, drawing a card from his deck with a cinematic flourish. "We must strike at its spirit! I summon the Dark Magician!"
In a flash of magical light, the purple-clad sorcerer appeared, levitating in the alley. "Dark Magic Attack!" Yami commanded. A beam of cosmic energy blasted the monster, forcing it back a step.
"Hmph. Pathetic," Kaiba sneered, stepping forward. He slammed a card onto his Duel Disk. "If you want to destroy a monster, you don't use parlor tricks. You use overwhelming force! Behold! Blue-Eyes White Dragon!"
A roar louder than the vortex ripped through the city as the magnificent, silver-skinned dragon materialized, its wings clipping the edges of the skyscrapers. "Burst Stream of Destruction!" Kaiba roared. The blinding white torrent of energy slammed into the beast, cracking its crystalline armor.
The monster shrieked, absorbing the residual energy, and prepared to unleash a devastating counter-blast that would level the city block.
"Guys, guys! Move!" Usagi screamed. She had finally stopped looking for a pen and paper. Her face was set in fierce determination. She raised the Eternal Tiare high into the air, her uniform erupting in a brilliant, warm pink light that cut right through the oppressive darkness of the vortex.
"What is that power?" Van muttered, wiping blood from his lip as he watched the girl radiate an energy that felt as ancient and pure as the Mystic Valley.
"It's... a localized energy surge that defies KaibaCorp physics," Kaiba muttered, though his eyes widened slightly.
"It is the light of hope," Yami Yugi smiled, stepping back to give her room. "Show them, Sailor Moon!"
"Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss!"
A cascading wave of starlight and holy energy erupted from Usagi's staff. It didn't just blast the monster; it enveloped it, washing over the jagged crystal and soothing the corrupted spirit within. The beast stopped its attack, its red eyes turning soft and clear before dissolving into a shower of harmless, glowing feathers.
Above them, the vortex began to spin backward, opening the correct dimensional gateways.
"It's over," Van said, sheathing his sword. He looked at Usagi with newfound respect, giving her a formal, royal bow. "You are a warrior of great honor, Princess of the Moon."
"Aw, shucks," Usagi blushed fiercely, rubbing the back of her head. "It was nothing! But hey, do you want to get some parfaits? I know a great place around the corner!"
"I don't eat sweets with anomalies," Kaiba snapped, though the tension had left his shoulders. His Blue-Eyes dissolved into digital particles. "My helicopter should be arriving in this coordinate sector shortly, assuming my pilots aren't entirely incompetent."
"Your path is your own, Kaiba," Yami Yugi said, a knowing smirk on his face as his body began to glow, fading back into his own timeline. "But remember, the heart of the cards exists in every world."
"Shut up, Yugi," Kaiba muttered.
As the dimensional rifts pulled them back to their respective realities, Van Fanel took one last look at the strange, neon-lit city. He adjusted his flannel cape, gave a nod to the girl with the buns, and leaped backward into the fading light of Gaea.
Left alone in the quiet alley, Usagi looked down at the sidewalk.
