DEITIES OF THE WASTELAND: The Pegasus Torrent

The canopy of the Forest of Silence was so dense that it swallowed the afternoon sun, leaving the world below wrapped in a perpetual, suffocating twilight. No birds sang. No leaves rustled. The only sound was the synchronized thud of boots pressing into the damp moss.
Boruto Uzumaki wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, his blue eyes darting nervously between the giant, twisted roots. Beside him, Masaki Kurusu walked with a calm, deliberate stride, his hand resting casually near the hilt of his sword. They had been tracking a faint, volatile energy signature for hours, searching for any sign of Ash Ketchum and the elusive seer, Kyogi Kagimi.
Suddenly, the ambient temperature plummeted. The shadows stretching from the ancient trees began to twist and lengthen, creeping toward the two travelers like living ink.
"Can you sense my presence, human child?"
The voice didn't come from the trees; it echoed directly inside their minds, heavy with an ancient, mocking power.
Boruto gasped, his right hand instantly flying to his forearm as the embedded Karma mark flared with a cold, piercing heat. He took a defensive stance, his eyes locking onto a swirling vortex of dark mist gathering on a massive stone altar ahead.
From the shadows stepped Von Flannel, his gaze piercing and absolute. He didn't look at Masaki; his eyes were fixed entirely on the young shinobi.
"Now I see you have strongly inherited the power of the Otsutsuki," Von Flannel murmured, his voice laced with a dangerous amusement. He took a slow step forward, the sheer pressure of his aura causing the surrounding moss to wither. "But you still can't use it to see ahead into your destiny. Yet... I can see your destiny quite well."
Boruto gritted his teeth, the blue energy of his Jougan eye flickering involuntarily. "What do you know about my destiny?"
Von Flannel ignored the outburst, turning his gaze slightly toward the horizon, where the distant, shattered spires of the Limitless Fortress cut into the sky. "Know this as well... those who defeat the gods cannot remain ordinary individuals any longer. Reflect well on thy path as you walk it, human child."
Masaki stepped slightly in front of Boruto, his spiritual pressure rising to counter the suffocating weight in the air. "We didn't come here for riddles, Flannel. We're looking for Ash and Kagimi. If you're standing in our way, step aside."
Von Flannel let out a low, aristocratic laugh that echoed hollowly through the dead trees. He looked back at them, his expression shifting to one of haughty dismissal.
"What do you want, a reward?" Von Flannel sneered, waving a dismissive hand as the mist began to pull him backward into the shadows. "Come to my castle. But you better not think this makes you a hero yet."
With a final, mocking smile, Von Flannel vanished into thin air, leaving the Forest of Silence completely still once more.
Boruto let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding, the glow of his Karma fading back into his skin. He looked at Masaki, his expression hardened with renewed determination. The path ahead was treacherous, but the missing pieces of the puzzle—and their lost allies—were waiting. They pushed forward into the deep dark, the warning of the gods still ringing in their ears.
