Cursed Fate: Excalibur, The Three Kings of The Underworld & Valley of The Lost
The neon lights of the lower sectors didn't reach this high. Up here, on the sky-high floors of the Babylon cities, the atmosphere was thin, cold, and perpetually draped in a suffocating gloom.
Yugi Muto leaned against the polished chrome railing of the balcony, staring out into the abyss of the night sky. The stars of the Milky Way seemed distant, almost detached from the chaos brewing below.
"What is darkness, really?" Yugi murmured, his voice carrying a weight that didn't belong to a teenager. "It swallows all things into its endlessness and lets nothing escape its grasp. The pitch-black void is always lurking in the background—even now, at thy right hand, until this cursed fate is spent."
Beside him, Ban Mido adjusted his glasses, the faint reflection of the city lights catching the lenses. He knew a thing or two about illusions and the dark corners of the human mind, but Yugi’s words held a cosmic dread.
"Sounds like you're describing something alive," Ban said, lighting a cigarette. "Or someone."
"The one who houses the Schephelus," Yugi continued, his eyes tracking a swirling nebula high above. "Descending from the Milky Way on high... Therefore, I invoke thee: feed with your fangs." Yugi shook his head, snapping out of the trance-like state. He looked down at the deck of cards gripped tightly in his hand. "Pegasus has the power to see into others' hearts, Ban. How can I beat a guy who can tell my hand and even my tactics before I even play them?"
Ban took a long drag, exhaling a plume of smoke into the void. "Hearts are fickle things, Yugi. Pegasus reads the surface, the intent. But if you're searching for Excalibur and the true heir to Camelot to turn the tide of this war, you're going to need more than just a good poker face. You're going to need a miracle."
The heavy automatic doors behind them hissed open.
Yusuke Urameshi walked out onto the balcony, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He looked exhausted, the spiritual pressure of the demon world pressing down on him like lead weights. As he approached, the parting words of his ancestral father, the Demon King Raizen, echoed relentlessly in his mind: There's more about the situation here in Demon World that I haven't told you yet.
"You guys look like you're planning a funeral," Yusuke said, leaning his back against the railing next to them.
"Just trying to solve a puzzle with half the pieces missing," Ban replied dryly. "What's the word from the underground, Spirit Detective?"
Yusuke sighed, looking out over the endless sprawl of Babylon. "Raizen filled me in before the end. The relationships down here are complex. In the past, he fought with Kagimi and Rubber merely for the sake of fighting. But things have changed."
Yugi turned to face him, his interest piqued. "Changed how?"
"Raizen told me I could get along with Kagimi," Yusuke explained, scratching the back of his neck. "He’s an isolationist. He claims these high floors of the Babylon cities as his territory. He’s a former member of the Volts who likes Demon World just as it is—divided, quiet, left alone. He won't bother us if we don't bother him."
"And the other one?" Ban asked, his eyes narrowing. "This 'Rubber' character?"
Yusuke’s expression darkened, the carefree attitude vanishing instantly. "That's the real problem. Raizen warned me to beware of Rubber. He speaks of unification, of bringing the realms together, but it's all a front. A smoke screen for moving his army into position."
Yugi looked from his cards back up to the cosmos, the weight of multiple worlds resting on their shoulders. Pegasus reading hearts, a hidden demonic army mobilizing under the guise of peace, and a mythical sword lost somewhere in the modern concrete jungle of Babylon.
"The darkness is moving," Yugi said softly, his grip tightening on his deck. "But no matter how deep the void, a single spark can light up the entire night. We just have to find Excalibur before Rubber makes his move."
Yusuke cracked his knuckles, a familiar, dangerous grin spreading across his face. "Then let's stop talking and start hunting. I owe Raizen a proper peace, and I'm not letting some demon army ruin it."
