Chronicles of Deltora: Ghost of the Babylon Archive
The forest was suffocatingly dark, the ancient trees stretching upward like gnarled hands to blot out the shooting stars that occasionally ripped through the night sky.
Standing in a tense semicircle, the group stared at the bizarre, mismatched lineup blocking the path: Spyro the Dragon, Hunter, Ripto, and the trio of sharp-eyed newcomers who looked like they had stepped straight out of a moody, late-90s dark fantasy anime.
"They're just staring," whispered Kyogi Kagimi, his hand hovering near the hilt of his weapon, his gaze shifting across the eerie, moonlit meadow. "What do they want?"
Before anyone could answer, a chilling voice echoed from the shadows. A towering, mysterious figure stepped forward, the ambient purple glow of a nearby magical flame casting long, harsh shadows across his face.
"Welcome to the Valley of the Lost," the figure intoned, his voice dripping with mocking grandness. "I am the Guardian of the Valley of the Lost. And I suppose you're here to steal my gem, aren't you?"
Leif, the King of Deltora, stepped forward, his hand resting firmly on the Belt of Deltora. Beside him, Spyro bared his teeth, a small puff of purple flame escaping his nostrils.
The Guardian chuckled, holding up a heavily ornate, ancient box. "You see, the gem sits inside this box. Win my game, and it’s yours. All you have to do is guess my real name. What is it?"
Silence hung heavy over the meadow. The characters traded wary glances, but before anyone could hazard a guess, Ginji Amano stepped up, his face tight with an entirely different kind of dread. He wasn't looking at the box. He was looking at the horizon.
"Ginji? What's wrong?" Masaki Karsu asked, noticing the electric tension rolling off him.
"What I am worried about," Ginji said, his voice dropping to a fierce whisper, "is that whoever kidnapped Makubex didn't leave a trace. And from what I can tell, Ripto is involved in this, too."
Across the clearing, Ripto offered a sinister, toothy grin, tapping his magical scepter against the ground but saying nothing.
The Beast Master, Shido Fuyuki, stepped out from the treeline, his eyes narrowed as he analyzed the magical signatures fading into the night. He looked toward Leif, then toward Spyro, mapping out a massive, impossible geography in his mind.
"If we want answers, we won't find them by guessing games in these woods," Shido added grimly. "Every bit of information from the dawn of time is in the Archives of Babylon City... inside the Limitless Fortress, at the edge of Dragon Shores, in the kingdom of Deltora. If Makubex is there, and if Ripto is pulling the strings, that's where we have to go."
Spyro looked at Leif, the dragon's eyes reflecting the starlight. The quest was no longer just about a gem or a single valley. The boundaries of their worlds were fracturing, and the answers lay deep within the heart of the Limitless Fortress.
