The heavy stone doors of Kandrakar’s deepest vault swung shut with a resounding thud that rattled the marrow in their bones. Smoke, smelling faintly of ozone and ancient dried lotus, coiled around the boots of the uneasy alliance standing in the dimly lit chamber.
Queen Elyion raised her hands, a soft sphere of light flaring from her palms to push back the pressing shadows. Beside her, Will Vandom gripped the Heart of Kandrakar tight against her chest; its pink brilliance pulsed in sync with her frantic heartbeat. Prince Phobos scoffed, folding his arms in smooth disdain, though his eyes darted nervously across the damp, rune-carved walls.
"You do not yet know what lies beyond the door," the mysterious voice echoed again, seemingly bouncing from the stone floor itself. "You have begun a journey which I am afraid will take all of your talents and strengths just to survive."
"Cryptic warnings," Scarface growled, resting a heavy, clawed hand on the hilt of his blade. "My favorite kind."
"Save the bravado, old wolf," Darkness murmured, his form shifting like ink dropped into water. "Feel the air. The magic here... it isn't light, nor is it Metamoor's dark art. It's empty."
Amado folded his arms, his pale blue eyes analyzing the glowing runes near the chamber's far archway. "It's a barrier designed to strip chakra and elemental magic alike. A dead zone."
Elyion stepped forward, her regal robe sweeping the dust. "Then we rely on each other. Phobos, no trickery. Will, keep the Heart protected. Whatever forced the Oracle to summon us—and them—together must be a threat to every realm we know."
Phobos offered a faint, sinister smile. "Desperate times make for fascinating company, sister."
Will took a deep breath, the pink light of her talisman reflecting in her determined eyes. She looked across at the mismatched group—royalty, guardians, mercenaries, and outcasts. "Alright," she said, stepping toward the obsidian door ahead. "Let's find out what's waiting for us."
