Genesis Shaman: Dark Descent of the Royal Court
The heavy iron doors of the Jirai Sanctuary groaned as they swung open, releasing a breath of stale, century-old air.
Sho, his Shamanic aura flickering like a candle in a draft, stepped inside first. He looked around the colossal, pillar-lined hall, a smirk playing on his lips. "Just like old times," he muttered, kicking a stray pebble. "This place hasn't changed a bit."
Behind him, Tenchi Masaki paused, his hand instinctively resting near the hilt of his master Key. He glanced into the shadows, his eyes narrowing. "It seems strange," Tenchi said, his voice echoing in the vast emptiness. "There are no guards here at all. The Emperor of Jirai is always guarded by the Great Knights—like ourselves."
"Maybe they all took a coffee break?" Zoey volunteered, her pink Mew Mew ears twitching as she scanned the rafters for any sign of an ambush. "Or, you know, maybe they realized we were coming and decided not to get in our way!"
Akira, standing with his arms crossed and his expression unreadable, scoffed. He wasn't looking at the architecture; his eyes were locked on the young boy walking ahead of them at the front of the group. The kid looked barely old enough to wield a wooden practice sword, let alone a cosmic legacy.
"Besides," Akira grumbled, his voice dripping with skepticism, "the Emperor wields the power of the universe itself. I don't see what the big deal is with this kid." He gestured dismissively toward the boy. "Sure, he follows the Wind Road, but he doesn't even have a Regallia yet. I'm not going to call him King just cause someone tells me to."
Sho paused, turning back to face Akira. The easygoing smirk faded from the Shaman's face, replaced by a sudden, heavy seriousness. The spirits swirling around Sho seemed to hum in agreement.
"You're missing the point, Akira," Sho said quietly, pointing a thumb back at the kid. "He's supposed to have the power of a Shaman—the one who connects this world with the next. The Regallia will come when the cosmos decides he's ready. But the spirit? That’s already there."
The boy stopped walking. He didn't turn around, but a sudden, gentle breeze began to swirl around his ankles, lifting the dust from the ancient stone floor. Even without a Regallia, the air in the room suddenly felt charged, heavy with the weight of a thousand unseen souls waiting for their ruler to speak.
Tenchi exchanged a glance with Zoey, both of them tightening their stances. The guards might have been missing, but as the wind began to howl inside the sealed chamber, they realized the Emperor didn't need protecting. The trial was about to begin.
