Disturbing Dreams: Phantom of the Blue Rose

The air in the Sleeping Forest didn’t just feel still; it felt heavy, like breathing through wet velvet.
Princess Aeyeka stood frozen, her fingers twitching against the fabric of her royal gown. Her heart was still hammering against her ribs, a frantic rhythm left over from the nightmare she had just broken free from.
What a dream, she thought, a shiver running down her spine. It seemed so disturbingly real. It’s quiet… almost like the calm before the storm. I’d better watch out. It could come true.
"Hey, Your Highness," a lazily sharp voice cut through the silence. "You look like you just saw a Ghost. And not the fun, haunting kind."
Aeyeka blinked, grounding herself in her surreal surroundings. Standing a few paces away was Xigbar, leaning casually against the trunk of a massive, gnarled tree. He was twirling one of his Arrowguns with practiced, effortless indifference, his single eye glinting with a mix of amusement and calculating suspicion.
"It was just a dream, Xigbar," Aeyeka said, trying to infuse her voice with the authority of her title, though it trembled slightly.
"Yeah, well, in our line of work, dreams have a nasty habit of tearing holes in reality," Xigbar replied, catching his weapon with a sharp snap. "Just saying. Keep your eyes open."
"If a storm is coming, we crush it," a harsh, metallic voice snarled.
Aeyeka looked over to Agito. The violent alter-ego of Minami was currently in control, his posture predatory and impatient. He aggressively shifted his weight on his Air Trecks, the mechanical skates emitting a low, impatient hum against the damp moss of the forest floor. He spat to the side, his eyes wild. "I'm sick of waiting around in these damn woods anyway. If something's coming to tear us apart, I want first dibs on ripping its throat out!"
"Calm down, bird-brain," Xigbar chuckled, entirely unbothered by the outburst. "You'll wake the trees."
"Let them wake!" Agito snapped.
"Both of you, quiet."
The command was soft, barely louder than a whisper, but it carried a chilling weight that instantly cut through the bickering. Saya stepped forward from the shadows of the canopy. The moonless sky of the Sleeping Forest caught the edge of her katana, reflecting a cold, silver gleam. Her uniform was immaculate, her expression entirely unreadable—save for the hyper-focused intensity in her eyes. She wasn't looking at Xigbar or Agito. She was scanning the thick, impenetrable fog rolling in between the ancient trunks.
Saya shifted her grip on her sword. "Aeyeka is right to be cautious. The air has changed. There is blood on the wind."
Aeyeka swallowed hard. The lingering dread from her nightmare seemed to manifest in the physical world as the temperature suddenly plummeted. The quiet of the Sleeping Forest was no longer peaceful; it was a suffocating shroud.
In her dream, the sky had shattered like glass, and a darkness without a name had swallowed them whole. She had watched Sia’s blade break, Xigbar’s smirk vanish, and Agito’s wild strength amount to nothing.
A low, vibrating rumble shook the earth beneath their feet. The roots of the giant trees groaned, twisting as if trying to flee from something deep underground.
Xigbar’s lazy demeanor vanished in an instant. He raised both Arrowguns, aiming them into the encroaching mist. "Well, look at that. Palace girl's got psychic powers. The storm just arrived."
Agito let out a manic, jagged laugh, the wheels of his Air Trecks screeching as he spun around to face the darkness. "Finally! Let's see what you've got!"
Saya drew her katana completely, the ring of the steel sharp and decisive. She didn't look back at the princess, but her voice was a steady anchor. "Stay behind us, Aeyeka."
Aeyeka drew a deep breath, her hands clenching into fists. The disturbing dream was unfolding right before her eyes, but as she looked at the bizarre, formidable alliance standing with her, she forced her terror down. It might have been the calm before the storm, but they were about to strike back like thunder.
