Bloody August & The Stone Anvil: Requiem of the Lower Town
The rain in Neotopia didn’t fall; it hissed. It beat down on the neon-drenched spires and slicked the cobblestones of the Central Plaza, where a massive block of black iron anvil sat fused into an ancient, moss-covered stone. Piercing straight through both was a blade that gleamed with an unsettling, pristine light.
Below the hilt, glowing softly against the dark metal, letters of gold were etched into the steel. They read:
Whosoever pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil is right wise King born of Neotopia.
"A bit old-school for a techno-metropolis, isn't it?"
Yugi Muto adjusted the collar of his leather jacket against the chill. The Millennium Puzzle rested against his chest, its golden edges catching the neon glow of a nearby billboard. Next to him stood Genji, the Lightning Emperor, his arms crossed, blue sparks occasionally dancing across his knuckles.
"The blade isn't the problem, Yugi," Genji said, his eyes locked on the alleyways surrounding the plaza. "It’s what’s coming for it."
A distortion in the air tore through the rain. A massive, towering silhouette materialized, surrounded by a crimson aura that smelled of ozone and copper. It was the Sorcerer Stabber, Orphen's lethal adversary—the Bloody August. Its monstrous, chaotic energy vibrated through the pavement. It didn't want to rule Neotopia. It wanted to render it down to ash.
"If that thing gets its claws on the sword, the localized magical feedback will vaporize the city," a voice crackled through Yugi’s earpiece. It was Makubex, speaking from his underground server hub, his fingers flying across a holographic keyboard. "But here’s the kicker of the prophecy I just decrypted: Sorcerer Stabber Will the Bloody August kill Yugi Muto and The lightning emperor Genji if it doesn't get the sword."
Yugi frowned, looking from the beast to the blade. "Wait. So if it doesn't get the sword, it’s fated to kill us?"
"Precisely," Makubex’s voice dropped, deadly serious. "The paradox of the enchantment locks onto the strongest defenders in the vicinity as a fail-safe. If it fails to claim the kingship, its power multiplies tenfold until you two are dead. But you can't let it have the sword. If it pulls that blade, Neotopia falls anyway. Catch-22."
"Then we just have to beat the odds," Genji gritted his teeth, his eyes flashing brilliant blue. "Prophecy or not, I'm not going down without a fight."
The Bloody August roared, a sound that shattered the glass of the surrounding storefronts, and lunged straight for the anvil.
"Genji, buy me time!" Yugi shouted, drawing a hand of cards from his deck as his aura shifted, the confident, ancient spirit of the Pharaoh taking the reins.
"With pleasure!" Genji leaped into the air, a localized thunderstorm erupting around him. "Lightning Bolt!" He hurled a massive javelin of pure electricity straight at the beast's chest. The impact threw the Bloody August backward, its crimson hide sizzling, but it barely slowed down. It lashed out with a shadow-claw, sending a shockwave that cracked the concrete beneath Genji’s feet and sent the Lightning Emperor skidding across the plaza.
The beast turned its burning eyes toward the stone. It reached out a massive, clawed hand, inches from the golden-lettered hilt.
"I don't think so!" Yugi yelled, slamming a card into his Duel Disk. "I activate the Spell card, Mystical Space Typhoon!"
A localized vortex of wind erupted around the anvil, the sheer force of the gale tearing at the Bloody August's grip, forcing the monster back a step.
"Makubex! Is there a loophole in this thing?!" Yugi called out, maintaining the spell as the beast thrashed against the wind.
"Working on it!" Makubex replied, his face illuminated by rows of cascading binary code. "The prophecy states the King born of Neotopia must pull it. Neither you, Genji, nor the Bloody August fit the biological data signature of this realm. The sword is rejecting all of you, which is why the kill-protocol initialized. But if I can spoof the anvil's magical matrix into thinking the sword has been pulled by a rightful heir, we can break the loop!"
"Do it fast!" Genji shouted, charging his fists with blinding light. He intercepted the Bloody August as it broke through Yugi's typhoon, tackling the monster away from the pedestal. Sparks and crimson shadows collided in a brutal display of martial prowess and raw magic, Genji using his speed to dodge lethal swipes, though the beast's sheer aura was beginning to wear him down.
"Splicing the data... rewriting the ancient runes... now!" Makubex slammed his hand onto his console.
The golden letters on the blade flashed violently. A high-pitched frequency echoed through the plaza, causing the Bloody August to screech and cover its ears. The magical tether locking the beast's fate to Yugi and Genji shattered like glass.
The sword didn't move an inch, but the anvil's glow faded into a neutral, dormant blue.
"The kill-protocol is offline!" Makubex cheered. "It's just a regular monster now!"
"Perfect," Yugi said, a sharp smile crossing his face as he drew his next card. "Now, let's show this nightmare how we handle things in our world. Genji, pin it down!"
"Right!" Genji channeled the absolute remainder of his energy, summoning a cage of blinding lightning pillars that locked the Bloody August in place.
Yugi raised his card high into the pouring rain. "From the depths of the shadows, arise! Dark Magician!"
The iconic sorcerer materialized in a flash of purple light, staff raised. Combined with Genji's crackling electricity, a dual blast of dark magic and lightning converged on the Bloody August. The monster let out one final, defiant howl before dissolving into a cloud of harmless crimson mist, washed away by the Neotopia rain.
Silence settled over the plaza. Genji breathed heavily, dropping his hands as the sparks faded. Yugi walked up to the stone, looking down at the gold lettering that still quietly promised a king.
"Good job, team," Makubex said through the comms, his tone returning to its usual cool cadence. "I'll leave the sword's security system locked down. Neotopia isn't ready for a king just yet
